We want a tiny house!

One thing we have been thinking about is where we would like to live when we decide to settle down. The tricky thing is that you don’t know what it’s like living somewhere until you’ve actually lived there. We don’t want to buy a piece of land in a nice little town, only to find out that the community isn’t quite what we had hoped.

Our friend, Gabriel Williams of Molecule Tiny Homes, in California has a solution – build a TINY HOUSE!

What is a tiny house?

A tiny house is just that – a very small house. They usually contain everything a couple or small family would need; a place to sleep, a kitchen and a bathroom. They are so small that they are often built on a flatbed trailer, giving them the added benefit of mobility.

Because tiny houses are so small they are have a much smaller environmental footprint. They take a lot less energy to build, to heat and cool and to maintain than a regular house. All those energy savings, of course, translate into a much less expensive house to build and live in. A lot of people make the change to a tiny house in order to simplify their lives. They find that living without all the ‘stuff’ we accumulate is very liberating.

Why would WE want a tiny house?

Having a house we can just tow around with us means we can take our tiny house to a prospective town, find a place to park it and see how we like the place. The community can ‘audition’ for us.

Once we have found our perfect piece of land we certainly want to build a more permanent dwelling (more on that in the future) and the tiny house would then become a guest house/retreat for family and friends.

The other great thing, for us, is that we could always guarantee we would always have somewhere to live. When you consider that people spend most of their lives with mortgage and debt hanging over them, having a house that you actually own, however small, sounds like a good idea.

We had the pleasure of dancing with Gabe while we were with Sacramento Ballet. He inspired us to investigate how we could live with less impact on our environment. He introduced us to raw food, natural building and the wonders of mushrooms (not the psychoactive ones)  – just to mention a few things.

He and his brother-in-law started their own company, Molecule Tiny Homes. They custom design and build tiny homes. They will draw up plans for customers, based on their needs, but who want to build the house themselves. Below is a video of one of their tiny houses.

Head on over to their website to check out more about them.

Very cool. It’s a pity we don’t live in California because we want one! Guess we’ll have to build it ourselves…

  1. Neat house BUT if you use both lofts then one has no way to get down NOT a good nor a safe situation. If they jump down, even if they manage not to hurt themselves, then no way to get back up without moving the ladder so anyone in the other loft can’t get down. People have to be able to get down even if only to get to the bathroom in the middle of the night, never mind if there’s a fire or some sort of emergency.

    • It’s true that the loft sleeping areas may not appeal to everyone but with tiny houses becoming more popular, there are many different configurations to choose from. You can even have them designed to suit your own needs!

  2. My Dream… is to walk and live with a gentle step in harmony with Earth Mother. What a wonderful compliment it would be to own a Tiny Home on wheels. I would embrace any information you would be willing to share.
    Namaste”
