Guess the mystery vegetable!

Happy New Year! Did you have a wonderful holiday break? We did too!
We thought we would begin our posts for 2013 with our first trip to the grocery store upon returning to Singapore. We found a very impressive vegetable – one that we had never seen on the shelf before – albeit an unlabeled one. We didn’t know what it was called but we bought it anyway. Can you guess what it is?

Can you guess what it is?

Halo-halo Halloween!

Halloween Halo-haloWe are very proud of ourselves at Dancing Greenly – we happen to have found a perfect sweet treat for Halloween!

It is called halo-halo (like ‘hello’ but with an ‘a’). It is a traditional dessert originating from the Philippines. We first tried it when we were in Manila performing on tour. We attended a big welcome party with lots of traditional dishes, and Halo-halo was our favourite. It is another southeast Asian food discovery that we really want to share. Continue reading

What can a cat teach us about heating and cooling our homes?

Romeo in the Sun

This looks like a nice warm spot for Romeo.

Imagine it is a cool winters day. The sun is shining, but, our cat, Romeo is rather cold. Where does he go? He finds a nice spot in the sun. This is the simplest aspect of heating your house with the sun. You might say it is rather obvious but houses really aren’t designed to make the most use of this simple idea.Romeo is Cold

One of the latest books we have read in our quest for knowledge has been “The Solar House” by Daniel Chiras, about ‘passive solar’ heating and cooling. If you don’t know what a ‘passive solar‘ house is don’t worry because you aren’t alone. It is a term that is relatively new to us but if you are looking to design or build a house, some day, it is something worth knowing about. Continue reading

Two New Roots – Lotus Root and Burdock Root

Lotus Root and Burdock Stir-fryIt has been really exciting for us to live in Singapore. When we go to the supermarket there are so many different fruits and vegetables for us to try. Some we know in the US and Australia in their preserved forms (water chestnuts and bamboo shoots) and others are completely foreign to us.

It’s always an adventure to try these new things and the latest ingredients to grace our plates are lotus root and burdock root. Continue reading

How to bake fresh bread while rehearsing a ballet…

We are in the studio rehearsing our latest show. A glance at the clock says it’s 1:45. No wonder we’re hungry – it’s nearly lunch! When 2 o’clock comes around and we walk into the common room a glorious aroma reaches our nostrils. It’s our freshly baked bread – from our slow cooker!

This is a quick bread made with half millet and half chickpea flour.

That’s right – we bake our own bread, at work, without an oven! It’s a wonderful thing to sit down to a lunch of nice warm bread with hummus and sprouts – or just Vegemite for that matter. Continue reading

We want a tiny house!

One thing we have been thinking about is where we would like to live when we decide to settle down. The tricky thing is that you don’t know what it’s like living somewhere until you’ve actually lived there. We don’t want to buy a piece of land in a nice little town, only to find out that the community isn’t quite what we had hoped.

Our friend, Gabriel Williams of Molecule Tiny Homes, in California has a solution – build a TINY HOUSE!

from Molecule Tiny Homes

What is a tiny house?

A tiny house is just that – a very small house. They usually contain everything a couple or small family would need; a place to sleep, a kitchen and a bathroom. They are so small that they are often built on a flatbed trailer, giving them the added benefit of mobility. Continue reading

Golden Jelly Fungus & Almond Powder

Good Morning and welcome to our blog! Breakfast seems the perfect place to start our first post, featuring our latest Asian ‘milk’ – Golden Jelly Fungus & Almond!

What is it?

This mix sounds crazy – but it really does taste great! It contains sweet almond kernels, golden jelly fungus powder, oat powder, and coconut nectar, and is imported from Taiwan.

There are actually many types of powdered drink mix available in Singapore, especially in health food stores. Some of our other favourites include pumpkin seed milk, black sesame milk, and beetroot oat milk.
